Earlier today I came across Proteigon (video above), a fantastic short film directed by Steven Briand during a two month internship with Partizan.

Get ready to be blown away by this great little number, created with little more than a camera, some paper, and an impressive understanding of geometry. As far as I'm concerned this is just another great example of how you don’t need big budgets...
This month's free tutorial was JUST posted and we can't wait to tell you about it! In this month's tutorial, you'll learn how vfx pros achieve a realistic smoke simulation. We’re talking about the heavy, ‘bubbling’, dry ice type smoke that covers the floor, creating another level of atmosphere within a shot. You’ve probably seen what we’re talking about in movies like ‘Hellboy II: The...
Realistic smoke simulation is no easy task at the best of times, but in this month’s free tutorial Mark Spevick (Head of 3D here at Escape Studios) demonstrates how you can create the wonderfully cinematic ‘dry ice’ effect. This is the heavy smoke...
I'm going to assume you know what Final Gather is (referred to as FG from now on), because you're all intelligent people and you know what you’re doing.
Slate Magazine has very nicely summarized an emerging trend - big Hollywood blockbusters are shying away from explosions, instead using the subtler but somehow more frightening implosion to tell the story of utter destruction.

This effect is hard to achieve with CG, even if it was...
Want to see a demo of how computer games will look in the not too distant future? You are in luck. Here is a big breakdancing bunny courtesy of Samuel Lapere. Forgive us, the quality isn't great but it's still pretty phenomenal.

Lapere is a graphics developer at OTOY, working on the holy CG grail of real-time photorealistic graphics. This big breakdancing bunny was created using Brigade...
I am destined to never grow up and quite frankly I refuse to see why I can’t stay immature for my entire life. I loved every single aspect of my childhood but the most memorable things for me were TV shows. Saturday mornings you would find me virtually attached to the TV for cartoon after cartoon. And another thing you should know is that I have a penchant for all things a little kitsch...
Special effects with computer graphics are all the rage recently. There are very few films produced these days without jaw dropping stunts courtesy of the digital department. But a lot of directors still prefer to shoot the real thing if they can as it nearly always looks better than the CG equivalent.

I am going to post a series of blogs to show some of these effects that you may have...
